Nikka Yoichi 10 Year Old Single Malt Whisky, Hokkaido, Japan

Is This The Best Whisky You Will Ever Try?

According to W. Blake Gray, having to travel to Japan to try was worth it…but you may not be as lucky to even have the opportunity to taste this beauty.

I’m going to tell you about one of the world’s most hard-to-get whiskies. It’s delicious and not especially expensive, but you can go all the way to the distillery (I did) and you still can’t get your hands on a bottle.

Just five years ago this whisky went for only $50, but now you’re lucky if you can find it for less than $500. You may get lucky to find some in Europe as the demand hasn’t been over the top yet.image

Whisky Expression…

How do you like your whisky? I’m a big fan of smooth bourbons and and whiskies, and as a native to a wine region, i like a spirit like whisky, to be smooth enough to be able to taste the undertones..kind of like the terroir of a wine.

According to Gray,

Part of the reason is quality. Yoichi 10-year is flat-out delicious: a long, satisfying palate of brioche, malted rice, refined smokiness and a hint of nori. It’s intense, but also smooth. If I were to compare it to anything, perhaps a smoother 18-year-old Macallan.

The Process…Photo

“We use many different types of casks,” Tomoyoshi says. “This is why we have expressions such as ‘Sherry & Sweet’ and ‘Peaty & Salty’ at the distillery. The actual composition of the type of casks used in an expression is unique to each product. For example, for Yoichi Single Malt (with no age statement) we use new American oak, ex-Sherry, refilled, remade and re-charred casks.”
